Stock Airbox and Filter
This here is the stock airbox on the X5. The air passes through the box, filtered of any outside particles that would otherwise damage the engine, and is fed to the top pipe you see in the photo and through a series of tubes, led to the intercooler, then sent to the engine. Underneath the box, there is a restrictive OEM filter that can be easily removed after the airbox is lifted. Often, this filter is simply replaced for an aftermarket performance counterpart that is similar shape and fitment. Although this does give a very slight power boost, it provides no where near the same volume of air as the open airbox design I chose, and of course doesn't give those sweet induction noises.
Aftermarket BMS Cold Air Intake
Here you see the open design Cold air Intake i installed onto the engine. By keeping an open, less restrictive design, the filter allows a much higher quantity of air into the engine from the outside, along with whatever air the intercooler feeds from the tube beneath it. Additionally, by exposing this area, the filter makes a really cool "whooshing" sound as the accelerator is pressed from the increased induction along with added turbo spooling noises(which all car guys know and love).
